Bi-Rite is preparing to open a new market at 6001 California St. in San Francisco, according to a California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control license filing. The new location will expand the locally established grocery and food business into the city’s Richmond District. An opening date has not yet been announced.
Bi-Rite has operated in San Francisco for more than 80 years. According to the company, the business began in 1940, when brothers Joe and Bill Cordano opened the original market on 18th Street. The Mogannam family acquired that location in 1964, and the business has since grown to include neighborhood markets, Bi-Rite Creamery, catering operations and a small farm. The company’s markets carry groceries as well as a variety of prepared foods.
Its departments include produce, meat, poultry and seafood, cheese, grocery products, wine, beer and spirits, floral items, and housemade foods. Bi-Rite says it works directly with more than 50 California farms for its produce, with more than 90% of its produce certified organic. Prepared food is another component of the market concept, with offerings ranging from salads and sandwiches to soups, grain bowls, pasta dishes, baked goods and desserts.
Current housemade selections include items such as chicken pot pie, beef bulgogi and rice bowls, roast turkey and provolone sandwiches, rigatoni Bolognese and several seasonal desserts. The new California Street location will add to Bi-Rite’s existing San Francisco presence, which currently includes markets on 18th Street and Divisadero Street, along with the company’s Creamery.
