Fuel Coffee’s Montlake location at 2300 24th Avenue E. will reopen as Taru Coffee & Play, with a soft opening planned for fall 2026, according to Taru’s website. Fuel announced the ownership change in an Instagram post, saying the café would temporarily close beginning October 1.

The new owner, Filisha Shah, lives in the neighborhood and has a young child. She explained the idea behind Taru on the café’s Instagram page.

“On rainy Seattle mornings I kept wishing for a place with good coffee where she could play. So I’m making it here,” Shah wrote.

Inspired by family cafés in Amsterdam, Taru will devote most of its room to The Grove, an indoor play area. Plans include wooden climbing structures, a cave and tunnel, interactive walls, and toys for building and imaginative play, with soft flooring underneath.

The space is designed for children ages 1 to 5, though older siblings are welcome. Parents and caregivers will stay nearby and can join in while spending time at the café.

Taru will continue serving Stamp Act coffee, with pastries and an expanded food menu intended for adults and children. Plans call for service from morning into evening, with caffeine-free drinks among the additions.

The team also hopes to host birthday parties, playgroups, and parent community gatherings. A full menu, operating hours, and party booking dates have not been released.
