Mabel’s Bakery, a Toronto-based bakery chain known for homestyle baked goods, is preparing to open a new location on College Street.
The new location is scheduled to open in early June, according to Insauga. The bakery will move into the longtime home of Riviera Bakery, which operated in the neighborhood for roughly 50 years before closing when family members retired, and others shifted focus to wholesale baking. A letter posted in the storefront window and signed by Mabel’s Bakery founder Lorraine Hawley confirms the transition and outlines renovation plans ahead of the opening. Customers can expect a mix of Mabel’s Bakery items along with select classic Riviera Bakery products.
In the letter, Mabel’s Bakery founder Lorraine Hawley said, “Hello everyone! After 50 wonderful years in Little Italy, Riviera Bakery is beginning a new chapter, with members of the family retiring and others continuing to focus on their wholesale baking traditions. We at Mabel’s Bakery are incredibly excited – and truly honored – to be joining this neighborhood and carrying on the tradition of quality baking in this special space.” She added, “Since opening our first store on Roncesvalles Avenue in 2008, community and great-tasting food have been at the heart of everything we do. We’re looking forward to bringing some of our favorite Mabel’s treats to Little Italy, while continuing to offer a few classic Riviera favorites as well! We will be working hard on our renovations over the next several weeks and look forward to opening our doors and meeting you all.”
Mabel’s Bakery was founded in 2008 on Roncesvalles Avenue and has since grown to four locations across Toronto. The bakery is known for its selection of brownies, butter tarts, breads, pies, and other homestyle baked goods made fresh daily. The company emphasizes local sourcing and made-from-scratch preparation across its product lineup.
The College Street location will add another stop to Mabel’s growing Toronto footprint, while also continuing a baking tradition that has long existed in the neighborhood. The shop is expected to maintain a similar offering to its other locations, with artisan breads, pastries, and comfort-focused baked goods available throughout the day.
