An exciting new cannabis retailer is coming to Bayview. It’s called Black Pepper and is expected to open up at 1555 Yosemite Avenue, Unit 8.

Founded by Melvin and Helen Simmons, who opened Tastebuds back in 2018, Black Pepper is a cannabis cultivation and distribution company that aims to become the Bay Area’s largest distributor of cannabis and related products.

According to a request for Conditional use Authorization uncovered by What Now San Francisco, Black Pepper will establish a 1,343 Square Foot cannabis microbusiness in an existing double-height, one-story warehouse space. The 120,000 Square Foot warehouse is currently owned by George Troosh, who is supporting Black Pepper’s expansion, and currently operates as Troosh Construction.

About 265 Square Feet of space, or 20% of the total area, will be reserved for cannabis cultivation and will function as an indoor farm. The rest of the space will be reserved for storefront retail. At the moment the Black Pepper team is busy equipping their new store with new display shelving, lighting, new signage and a new fresh air intake fan.

Black Pepper is expected to be Bayview’s one-stop-shop for all cannabis needs. Only a few blocks away from from the Carroll Avenue light rail stop, city officials are hoping that the new store could help bring new life to the industrial district.

While most of the surrounding buildings are other warehouses, things are starting to change. More and more Bay View warehouses are being converted to bars, restaurants, stores, and cafés. Black Pepper would be the first cannabis retailer to open in the neighborhood, the closest alternatives would be Post Green Cannabis in Hunters Point and Bloomerang in Portola Place.
