An old church in Kirkwood is getting a serious facelift. Day Kennedy, a self-trained stained glass artist and the owner of online retail shop Daylight Glassworks, is converting the shuttered Liberty The New Creation Church into her own stained glass retail store, ATL Glassworks.
Since 2017, Kennedy has been designing and handcrafting stained glass pieces in her home studio. Until now, her pieces have only been available online and at vintage antique store Highland Row, but this summer the artist is getting her own brick-and-mortar.
“I never intended for stained glass to become my entire life, but a few years ago I was doing graphic design for a marketing company and I was miserable. I stumbled upon a stained glass youtube tutorial and bought a sample kit,” says Kennedy. “I fell in love with it immediately. Would stay up until 2 in the morning playing with glass. Eventually I quit to pursue glass full time.”
ATL Glassworks is expected to open summer 2021. Kennedy will sell glass and supplies and offer stained glass workshops for those interested in learning the art. The space will also serve as a retail shop for her stained glass artwork and her own personal studio.
“There really isn’t a good place to buy glass in person in Georgia,” says Kennedy. “I’m hoping that ATL Glassworks will fill that void.”
Kennedy hopes to open ATL Glassworks by mid-August, so if you’re looking for some handcrafted artwork or a new hobby, you should be able to head there later this summer.
