On the heels of its upcoming San Diego debut, the owners of Bopomofo Cafe are already considering other locations in the area.
Co-founders Eric Wang and Phillip Wang are getting ready to open a new site in the Convoy District at 7951 Othello Avenue in mid-January, but that’s just the beginning. The duo tells Eater San Diego that they hope to open more than one location in San Diego and are creating some new menu items that will be specific to these stores. The exact area of the new locations is yet to be revealed, but the Convoy area will be an excellent start for the company.
This will be the company’s third location, following Artesia at 11632 South Street Suite 105 and in San Gabriel at 841 W. Las Tunas Drive. The upcoming Convoy site will be significant for Philip, who spent a lot of time in the area while attending UCSD in the early 2000s. When the new Bopomofo Cafe opens, customers can expect a fusion of Chinese, Taiwanese, and American flavors, with some top-sellers being the mapo tofu-topped tater tots, Taiwanese fried chicken sandwiches, and Hainan chicken tacos. The eatery also offers a handful of boba drinks and other unique beverages.
“As a cafe, BOPOMOFO seeks to represent this nostalgia and foundation with high-quality ingredients, homemade items, and an influence from both our cultural backgrounds,” according to the company’s website. “Through elevated food, beverage, service, and design, we seek to inspire and uplift the local community.”
