The Renaissance Theatre Company announced its move this week to Ivanhoe Village at 415 E. Princeton Street, a 15,486 square-foot warehouse site previously occupied by the Orlando Ballet.
Philanthropist and founding member Chris Kampmeier purchased the $4.8 million site to give the non-profit organization a permanent address.
“A thriving arts and cultural community is one of the strongest indicators of a flourishing city, and people with means can contribute by creating good-paying jobs for upcoming artists who want to bring new works to life,” said Kampmeier.
For playwright and director Donald Rupe, the mission of The Renaissance Theatre Company is to bring original theatrical performances to the community while focusing on fair pay for artists, promoting environmental stability, and showcasing diverse perspectives.
“Live theatre is one of the best ways to experience and internalize a different perspective, and I think Donald’s plans for the space will have a long-term impact on our city,” said Kampmeier.
A performance venue with 200 seats, large lobby and bar, and rehearsal space are included in the renovation plans. Stages, dressing rooms, and dedicated areas for set construction and prop and costume storage will fill the rest of the space.
Baker Barrios Architects have been hired to convert the building. Leaders in arts and entertainment architecture, the firm has contributed to other area arts venues like Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Harriett’s Orlando Ballet Centre, and the anticipated Black Box Theatre at Rollins College.
The venue will open before construction is complete to stage its first performance, “Nosferatu” a theatrical horror event, which is scheduled to run during October 2021.
An open house fundraising event will be held September 10 & 11 to benefit future programs, construction and equipment needs. Patrons can also donate online.
