Frozen Pelican, known for its shaved ice and good food, is preparing to open a new restaurant in Melrose, located at 854 N SR 21.

The company that originated in Keystone Heights has now submitted plan reviews to the city to open a brick-and-mortar, according to public records. Owner Troy Stephens tells What Now Jacksonville he hopes to open the restaurant by July 4, but they are still waiting on the state and Putnam County to move forward. Customers can expect plenty of shaved ice flavors when this new restaurant opens in a few weeks. The company’s original location features over a dozen flavors.

Frozen Pelican first opened at 130 SE Nightingale Street in Keystone Heights. Since then, the company has gone mobile and closed its first storefront. On top of the various shaved ice options, available in small or large, the original location offers hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos, BBQ sandwiches, and fries. Some shaved ice flavors include red raspberry, wedding cake, cinnamon, cheesecake, watermelon, and more.

Frozen Pelican will move into a vacant standalone building that was the former home of the law office of Gordon William K, across from Betty’s Pizza & Subs. This will be a perfect location for the new shaved ice shop on the east edge of the Melrose Historic District. While there are a handful of places in the area to get some dessert, none offer shaved ice. The next closest shaved ice option is near the Gainesville Regional Airport.
