A Toronto-based pizza joint is set to bring Detroit-style pies to Boston’s Back Bay.

According to Boston Restaurant Talk, Descendant Detroit Style Pizza will open its first U.S. location in the Prudential Center, located at 800 Boylston St.

Owner Ike Tzakis—a Boston native—confirmed this news with What Now Boston, sharing that the menu will mirror Descendant’s two Toronto locations, but with one twist: only 8×10-inch pies will be offered—no slices or large sizes.

In the signature Detroit style, Descendant’s square pizzas feature sauce on top and extending to the edges, with flavors ranging from classics like cheese and pepperoni to inventive options like Gat Daddy, Truff Guy, and Electric Avenue.

“It’s something unique to Toronto, I would say, because it’s a multicultural city,” said Tzakis. “We take from different ethnicities and different countries, and we incorporate it in pizza.”

As Toronto’s first Detroit-style pizzeria, Descendant has earned a reputation for quality. “I think we raised the bar,” Tzakis noted. The dough undergoes a meticulous 48-hour cold fermentation process, with every step temperature-checked to ensure optimal quality. The restaurant prides itself on “delivering a consistent perfect pizza every time,” as stated on Descendant’s website.

Descendant has also impressed critics. Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports, who has reviewed over 1,000 pizzerias on his show One Bite Pizza Reviews, gave Descendant’s Leslieville location an 8.1 out of 10, calling it “as good as a Detroit pizza as you can have.”

While an exact opening date hasn’t been set, Tzakis hopes to welcome customers to Descendant’s Prudential Center location within the next few weeks.
