Since 2019, Tantay has been operating out of the Allen Neighborhood Center and serving the neighborhood with authentic Peruvian cuisine. Now, owner Jose Aste is ready to open his first brick-and-mortar location at the beginning of 2024. The new Tantay will be located in the 1,500 sqft space at 2398 Jolly Road, formerly Woody’s Oasis.

Mid-Michigan has always had a void in its culinary scene when it comes to Peruvian food. In fact, Tantay is the only Peruvian eatery in the region. Therefore, moving to a freestanding brick-and-mortar restaurant is a dream come true for Aste. Tantay, in Peruvian, means “coming together.” The new restaurant will have an indoor dining place with 30 seatings, truly allowing people to sit, dine, and gather. Building on top of the community concept, the new Tantay also plans to source fresh, seasonal ingredients from local producers and suppliers.

Inheriting the existing menu, the new Tantay will continue to serve up all the Peruvian favorites, including ceviche, potatoes topped with a zesty Peruvian huancaina sauce, and Aji de Gallina, a chicken stew in a creamy Peruvian sauce. The new Tantay will also carry items sold previously at Tantay’s food truck that operates around Lansing. Meanwhile, the food truck will continue operation after the new eatery opens.

By the time of this coverage, Aste hasn’t responded to What Now Detroit‘s email request for comments.
