The Eastman, located inside the Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters in Rochester at 336 S Main St, has submitted plans to the Rochester Planning Commission to build a new seasonal patio. The project underwent a public hearing this month. The proposed patio will be open from May through October, according to city ordinance.

Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters was founded by Nathan Hamood in 20009 and currently has 4 locations in Rochester, Detroit, Royal Oak, and Ferndale, with Rochester being the company’s very first cafe. The Eastman, also founded by Hamood, is a hidden cocktail bar concept under the cafe that opened in 2023. The proposed outdoor dining area is located on the west side of Main Street Alley, just south of E.4th Street, and will extend the hidden bar to a ground level.

“We believe this significantly improves our ability to serve our clientele and drastically improves the
aesthetic appeal and safety of an existing space,” Hamood stated in his response to the planning commission.

According to application materials, the patio will be open from 5 to11 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, and 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday. Rochester-based Nightingale Co leads design and remodeling. Plans indicate the project will convert one of the street-facing windows into a bi-fold door connecting to the newly proposed patio. The new small 16′ x 18′ patio will hold three two-top tables and will feature overhead lighting and greenery.

Hamood is seeking immediate approval to complete the patio construction before summer ends.
