On April 14, Mayor Joseph DeStefano, alongside local, state, and federal officials, announced plans to develop 100 new affordable housing units in Middletown. The announcement was made at the Middletown Housing Authority.

Highlights

  • 100 new affordable units will be built in the City of Middletown.
  • Mayor Joseph DeStefano announced the apartments for low-income residents on April 14.
  • The project will have two 50-unit apartments in areas near the Middletown Housing Authority and the David Moore Heights complex.

Middletown Set to Welcome 100 New Affordable Apartments

The latest housing project in the City of Middletown is a partnership between the Housing Authority, RUPCO, and the state. Through it, two 50-unit apartments are proposed for the low-income families of Middletown.

The first set of 50 one- and two-bedroom units will be constructed on a one-acre parcel adjacent to the Middletown Housing Authority, a property donated by the city.

The other 50 units are set to be developed at the David Moore Heights complex.

Revamp Plans for Existing Units and a 100-Year-Old Water Main

Other than affordable units, Middletown’s new housing initiative will allow other benefits for the residents as well. Officials announced on Monday that plans are on to revamp almost 200 existing units in the region.

Additionally, a 100-year-old water main will be repaired under the affordable housing project. For this, the developers of the Middletown project will be using a $3.5 million federal grant. This repair work will help grow the pace of the project with a smooth water supply.

The 100-unit affordable housing project will also cover the setting up of a community garden in the area. For the same, the Middletown developers will be using a state grant.

Timeline for the New Middletown Housing Project

Voting for the new Middletown project will begin in May. It is expected that the common council will vote in favor of the affordable housing initiative.

The housing authority stated that once they get a green signal, they will commence construction in the fall of 2026.

Why Are Officials Focused on Collaborative Housing Projects?

After getting the grant for the latest housing project, Congressman Pat Ryan stressed the importance of collaborative housing initiatives in Middletown. He claimed that housing was the biggest problem in the area.

Additionally, he said that officials should work together to build thousands of housing units every year across the Hudson Valley. By doing this, they could help many low-income residents of Middletown.

Ryan said, “To see a hundred new units here in the City of Middletown alone is a big, big deal.”

The latest 100 affordable units project in Middletown highlights impactful progress in meeting the city’s housing needs. With the support of local, federal, and state authorities, the project aims to offer Middletown’s low-income families a safe and affordable housing opportunity.
