Stella Luna Gelato, a family-owned and operated European cafe serving up breakfast, lunch, snacks, desserts, and alcohol, is getting ready to open a new location soon in the ByWard Market at 101 York St.
The award-winning gelato cafe is set to open its third location in the former Pub 101 space within Ottawa’s ByWard Market as early as next weekend, according to the Ottawa Business Journal. Co-owner Lawry Trevor-Deutsch confirmed to What Now Montreal that the team is working diligently to complete the new space and expects the launch of the latest concept to happen soon.
Known for its artisanal gelato and European-style cafe fare, Stella Luna has established a strong reputation both locally and internationally. The cafe won Best Gelato in Canada and placed in the Top 3 Gelato Shops in the Americas at the Gelato World Tour in Chicago (2016). It also received the International Journalist’s Choice Award in Rimini, Italy (2017), and has been ranked among the Top 5 Desserts in Ontario. Urban Spoon has listed it among Canada’s Best 100 Places to Eat.
Founded by Tammy and Alessandro Giuliani, Stella Luna was inspired by the idea of creating a gathering space reminiscent of an Italian piazza. Tammy apprenticed in Bologna in 2010 under renowned gelato masters before opening the first cafe. The business remains family-owned and operated. The menu goes beyond gelato, offering breakfast, lunch, desserts, and beverages, including local craft beer and vintage Italian wines. Signature offerings include freshly prepared panini, soups, and gelato cocktails.
The next generation of leadership includes Erica Giuliani, a fourth-generation Master Gelato Chef whose roots in gelato-making date back to the 1930s in Bergamo, Italy. She has won numerous international accolades. Joining her is Jonah Trevor-Deutsch, an engineer and hospitality veteran focused on delivering high-quality guest experiences.
Also launching soon in the ByWard Market area is Barrio, a new restaurant from Chef Lizardo Becerra, owner of Raphaël Peruvian Cuisine. Barrio is expected to open later this month on Rideau Street, contributing further to the neighborhood’s dynamic culinary scene.
