A fast-casual concept known for its creative spin on halal street food is making its way to Massachusetts.

The Halal Shack, an Albany, New York-based restaurant chain, will soon debut four locations in the state, all on college campuses. According to the company’s website, the eatery is headed to Boston University, Northeastern University, Suffolk University, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. It looks like the Worcester spot was briefly up and running a couple of years ago before temporarily closing for unknown reasons.

Founded by CEO Jamal Rasoully at the University of Albany Campus Center in 2017, The Halal Shack blends Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors with a distinctly American twist. The menu is heavily customizable, with options like build-your-own rice or salad bowls, pita wraps, and loaded fries, along with inventive eats like ‘naanaritos’ and ‘naanadillas.’

Rasoully is also behind Jamal’s Chicken—a fried chicken chain that’s likewise certified halal and will also join The Halal Shack at Worcester Polytechnic Institute—and Baba’s Pizza, a halal-friendly pizzeria.

The Halal Shack’s Massachusetts launch is part of a rapid expansion that’s seen the brand grow to nearly 40 locations open or in development across 15 states. Here’s where to find the upcoming eateries:

  • Boston University: 775 Commonwealth Ave
  • Northeastern University: 360 Huntington Ave
  • Suffolk University: 73 Tremont St
  • Worcester Polytechnic Institute: 100 Institute Rd

The Boston University location is gearing up to open, with a recent Craigslist posting seeking an assistant general manager. What Now Boston has reached out to The Halal Shack team for more details on opening timelines, so stay tuned for updates.
