Johnny Rad’z Pizza, a new pizzeria collaboration between restaurateur Johnny Rad and pro skateboarding icon Mike McGill, is getting ready to open in Encinitas at 828 North Coast Highway 101.

The new restaurant is set to move into the former home of Osteria Tavi, according to the company’s Instagram and first reported by SanDiegoVille. Although an exact opening date has not been announced, construction is currently underway, with plans to open later this year. Customers can expect a casual neighborhood spot offering sourdough pizza, salads, local brews, and wine.

Johnny Rad’z Pizza marks a new entry into Encinitas’ dining scene, joining a growing list of athlete-backed restaurants in the area. Mike McGill, known for inventing the McTwist skateboarding trick and a longtime community fixture, brings local roots to the concept. The location on North Coast Highway 101 has a history of neighborhood-focused eateries and benefits from steady local and tourist traffic.

This partnership between Johnny Rad and McGill taps into the city’s mix of skate culture and culinary ambition. McGill’s involvement reflects his continued engagement with Encinitas through his retail business, McGill’s Skateshop. Johnny Rad’s experience as a restaurateur adds operational expertise to the venture.

The menu will focus on sourdough pizzas made with fresh ingredients, alongside salads and a selection of local craft beers and wines. The combination aims to appeal to both longtime locals and visitors exploring the North County corridor.

Mike McGill is a recognized figure in skateboarding history, credited with the groundbreaking McTwist trick and as a member of the Bones Brigade team during the 1980s. He also owns McGill’s Skateshop in Encinitas, reinforcing his local ties. This new restaurant continues his involvement in the community beyond skateboarding.
