Izakaya Present Tense shuttered along Hart Street in Wedgewood-Houston at the end of July.

“We are down to the last run at Hart Street. After two wild-ass years in this space, we’re closing it out and moving on. It’s been a blur. It’s been beautiful. It’s aged us all like ten years and somehow still felt like a blink,” owner Ryan Costanza said in the Instagram announcement at the time.

In that announcement, Costanza had teased that Present Tense would be opening in another space in Wedgewood-Houston more suited to the needs of the concept.

“Present Tense was always supposed to be a little tighter, more intimate, more us — and we’ve finally found the space that fits that,” Costanza wrote.

Now, the team is in the process of preparing the new space for opening at 509 Houston St. In an announcement earlier this month, Costanza invited people to invest in the brand and shared that reservations would begin to open in November for dining at the new space.

Present Tense is known for its chef-driven creations and natural wines. At the previous location, Present Tense offered an omakase experience as well as izakaya-inspired small plates that customers could purchase a la carte.

Local cafe Hearts is eyeing the space that formerly belonged to Present Tense on Hart Street.
