Owners of the first Onigiri shop in the city have plans to move to a new space following being in the community for two years.
Bridgetown Bites recently revealed Onigiri Gaijin is moving to 621 SE Morrison Street by the end of the year. The new space will have the same menu, and the team is preparing for the move. Owner Erin Haltom said by Oct. 31, they have to be out of their current location, and there is not an opening date right now.
The shop has become popular for their rolls with broiled salmon and fried shrimp with unagi sauce. Onigiri is essentially a Japanese rice ball with ingredients like fish and sauces. For the new Buckman shop, they will have a full indoor onigiri bar inside.
Onigiri Gaijin opened their 400 SE 12th Street location this June. The new spot will be at the former Pizza Jerk space on SE Morrison Street. The timeline of their move is unclear, as Haltom mentioned the team has to work with the health department to inspect the new location.
At the same building are Star Bar, Bingo Burger, and Creepy’s the bar. The area is also considered Central Eastside. Around the city, there are other locations that serve onigiri, but Onigiri Gaijin is known for being the first dedicated shop.
