Kabobeesh and Karak Cha House to Relocate to Philadelphia’s Powelton Neighborhood

The Indian and Pakistani restaurants known for kabobs, curries and street food plan a late-fall debut at a larger location.

An Indian and Pakistani restaurant, along with its fast-casual outpost next door, is relocating after over 15 years of serving kabobs and curries in University City.

Kabobeesh and Karak Cha House, owned by Asad Ghumman, are heading to a larger space at 3748 Lancaster Ave. on the ground floor of the Triad apartment complex in Powelton, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Kabobeesh prepares each kabob to order over a natural charcoal grill, giving its halal-certified chicken, beef, lamb, and fish a rich, smoky flavor. The meats are marinated in a signature blend of spices, while soft, fluffy naan is baked fresh in a Tandoor. Drawing inspiration from traditional Kashmiri recipes, the restaurant offers a taste of home with authentic Pakistani dishes such as Haleem, Nehari and Paya, which are rarely found in the United States, according to the website.

Standouts on the menu include the Nashta-e-Khaas breakfast platter with puris, prathas, chana and halwa, as well as grilled favorites like tandoori chicken and paneer tikka. Popular entrees include biryani and chef specials such as chicken karahi, mutton karahi and Lahori chargha, showcasing the restaurant’s flavors.

Karak Cha House offers street food favorites, including paratha rolls, samosa chaat, papri chaat, and mirchi fries. Desserts range from gulab jamun and falooda to kulfi-based treats, while the beverage menu features hot chais, flavored lassis, mojitos and boba teas.

Powelton offers several halal dining options, including Saad’s Halal Restaurant, Pita Chip and local food carts. Kabobeesh and Karak Cha House will add to the growing list of halal favorites in the area.

While an official opening date hasn’t been set, the outlet reported the restaurant expects to debut its new location in late fall. For updates, visit the restaurant’s website and follow along on Instagram and Facebook.
