A health inspection by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health on October 22 found several violations at The Sidecar Bar & Grille, including sanitation issues in the second-floor bar area and improper food holding temperatures.

According to the health inspection report, The Sidecar Bar & Grille was flagged for multiple cleanliness and maintenance lapses. They are as follows:

  • There was no handwashing signage at the warewashing area sink to remind food employees to wash their hands.
  • The bar’s drinking ice was observed to be in direct contact with a cold beer plate. Duck observed thawing in a hand-wash sink instead of an approved food preparation sink.
  • Black residue and pink slime were observed inside the second-floor bar ice machine bin near the water reservoir, and pink slime was observed in the soda gun holster.
  • Chicken, fish, chickpeas, and beef were held between 44°F and 47°F instead of at or below the required 41°F.
  • The report noted that ready-to-eat foods stored for more than 48 hours in the refrigerators were not date-marked.

  • Food items in the walk-in cooler were not stored at least six inches off the floor, the report said.
  • Knives and cleavers were not stored properly. They were between table edges that are not easily sanitized, the inspectors noted.
  • The report noted maintenance issues. It included a damaged walk-in cooler door sweep, refrigerators not maintaining proper temperatures, and a 2nd-floor utility closet door in disrepair.
  • Kitchen equipment and shelving were found to be noncompliant with cleaning and safety standards, including foil-lined shelves, concrete blocks supporting the dishwasher, and milk crates used for elevation.
  • Inspectors noted dust, grime, and food residue on equipment, shelves, sinks, and storage areas throughout the restaurant.
  • Uneven floors and ceilings, along with exposed electrical and utility lines, were observed in the basement and first-floor bar.
  • The report also mentioned that the buildup of grime and debris on floors and in corners under and around kitchen and bar equipment.

According to the report, the restaurant is expected to address the noted violations. Failure to do so may lead to revocation of its health license and other legal consequences.
