Kemah’s Beloved Greek Restaurant Hosting Final Dinner on New Year’s Eve

Bakkhus Taverna in Kemah is closing permanently after a prolonged dispute with the city. The restaurant will continue its service through the holiday season and will serve the farewell dinner on New Year’s Eve.

Bakkhus Taverna to Close After 17 Years in Kemah

Bakkhus Taverna in Kemah, has been a local favorite since 2008. The restaurant has been a local favorite for dishes like the Prime Rib Sandwich, Spicy Trojan Poppers, Greek Bar Trash, Medusa Burger, and desserts including Baklava Cheesecake.

Through an official Instagram post, the restaurant shared the heartbreaking news of its closure. In the post, the restaurant wrote, “Our last day of business, in this location for the time being, will be December 31, New Year’s Eve.”

Bakkhus Taverna thanked its community and staff, inviting patrons to join in farewell holiday dinners before the year ends.

“It’s been a great 17-year run, and I would like to thank everyone who has supported us nonstop over the years, as well as the great staff members we have had throughout,” said the restaurant.

The closure drew an outpouring of messages from loyal patrons, many sharing cherished memories on social media.

One customer wrote, “We will miss you! Thank you for serving the community for so many wonderful years!” While another shared, “I hope you can move somewhere, but I will surely get there several times before December 31.”

Final Holiday Season After Years of City Struggles

In the official social media post, the restaurant cited a longstanding battle with the city as one of the major reasons behind its closure.

“Several factors have contributed to this very difficult decision, and I’m sure most people are very aware of the ongoing fight with the city that has dragged out and that we have never recovered from,” highlighted the restaurant.

In the meantime, the restaurant remains strong and will push through the holiday season for its staff. “Our staff have income for themselves and their families, so we would love to have you all as our guests still,” shared the restaurant.

Bakkhus Taverna will wind up its business after the New Year’s Eve celebration. With this closure, the Houston dining scene loses a long-standing neighborhood gem.
