A long-time fixture in the community, Skalet Family Jewelers is closing its doors permanently on December 31. The family-owned jeweler is known for its handmade fine jewelry, customized designs, and repair services.

Skalet Family Jewelers to Close

Skalet has emphasized quality and a personalized experience, while catering to clients for generations. According to the company website, owner Howard Skalet said that it was time for him to retire and close the business after an incredible journey.

“After an incredible journey, the time has come to retire and close Skalet Family Jewelers. For over 100 years, our family has been making jewelry for your family,” he said.

Skalet joined the company in 1982, becoming the fourth generation to do so. The company brought the best fine jewelry to the community.

“In 1982, I joined my family’s jewelry store, becoming the 4th generation to do so. With my parents, John & Barbara, my brother Adam, and Todd Sullivan, we have brought you our very best in the fine art of Jewelry Making and Design,” he added.

Skalet noted that the company has had several good memories when the team has celebrated and cried together, but it was time for him to move on to the next phase of his life. “We have had so many wonderful experiences; we have shared celebrations and laughed, hugged, and cried together. After over 43 years, the time has come to begin my next chapter of life,” he concluded.

Inside the Skalet Family Jewelers Legacy

Russian goldsmith Ben Skalet came to New York in 1880 to build a jewelry business with his sons. The family also produced surgical equipment during World War II before later returning to jewelry-making and expanding its reputation.

John Skalet focused on creating artistic, client-focused jewelry in the late 1960s. He opened Golden Treasures in Tahoe City in 1973, later moving the business to Sacramento in 1975.

In 1983, the fourth generation rebranded the business as Skalet Family Jewelers. As the store prepares to close, it leaves behind a legacy reflected in heirloom pieces and memories that it has spent years building with the community.
