Amazon is preparing to open a new brick-and-mortar retail store in Orland Park following recent village approvals. The Orland Park Village Board approved the project for a site at 159th Street and LaGrange Road. The approval was granted during the board’s January 19, 2026, meeting.
Orland Park Village Board Approves Amazon’s First-Ever Retail Store
The long-vacant site of the former Petey’s II restaurant in Orland Park Village will soon be home to a retail store. Amazon plans to develop a 230,000-square-foot brick-and-mortar retail store on this site. The proposal received final approval from the Village Board earlier this week.
The one-story building will offer groceries, household essentials, and general merchandise. The store will operate as a large-format retailer, similar in scale to a Walmart Supercenter. However, it is not an Amazon warehouse, a distribution center, or a fulfillment center.
The project will not be receiving any financial incentives from the Village Board. Village officials expect the project to generate millions in sales and property tax revenue for Orland Park. The revenue is expected to support village infrastructure projects and other long-term community improvements.
“When a global retailer of this scale considers investment in Orland Park, it sends a strong signal about the vitality of our community and the strategic importance of this corridor,” said Orland Park Mayor Jim Dodge. “It demonstrates that Orland Park continues to be viewed as a premier destination for major commercial investment.”
The proposed store will include seven loading docks, compared to the six at the Orland Hills Walmart Supercenter. The retail store will not change into a fulfillment center, as the approved zoning and Special Use Permit for this site specifically prohibit warehouse or distribution uses.
Infrastructure Enhancements Planned
Beyond the store itself, the project is expected to unlock long-planned infrastructure improvements across Orland Park. It will then help fund the village infrastructure to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and increase safety. Without this new revenue, these improvements would not have been made possible due to previous spending priorities and debt commitments.
The tax revenue will be used to bring several upgrades, including road extensions, new traffic signals, additional turn lanes, and more. Here are the details of the infrastructure improvements that this project brings:
- The extension of Ravinia Avenue to LaGrange Road aims to be completed by the end of 2026.
- The installation of traffic signals at 161st Street and LaGrange Road.
- There will be an extension of dual left-turn lanes from eastbound 159th Street onto LaGrange Road. It includes the closure of the median across from Lake View Plaza.
- There will be an addition of deceleration lanes on 159th Street and LaGrange Road. There will also be an acceleration lane on LaGrange Road.
- There will be a potential burial of utility lines along 159th Street from LaGrange Road to the west of Costco.
“The traffic issues and corresponding solutions have been known for many years,” Dodge said. “Because of previous spending priorities and previous debt commitments that this new Village Board is now working to address, the Village would not have been able to fund these improvements without the new revenue generated by Amazon’s retail store.”
Job Creation and Local Participation
In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the project is expected to deliver significant economic benefits. It includes the creation of significant employment opportunities. Construction of the store is expected to create approximately 200 jobs.
Once the retail store is complete, an estimated 500 permanent positions will be available. Amazon is committed to using local labor throughout the construction process. The development will directly support local families, strengthen the workforce, and reinvest in Orland Park.
With approvals now in place, Amazon’s first-ever retail store will now progress in Orland Park Village. It will redevelop a long-vacant site while bringing in new jobs, tax revenue, and infrastructure improvements. Once complete, the project will transform a long-vacant property into a major commercial anchor for Orland Park.
