U.S. Online Retail Giant Launches Ultra-Fast Delivery to Challenge Walmart

Amazon is expanding rapid delivery options for over 90,000 products as it intensifies competition with other e-commerce players.

Amazon is expanding its high-speed delivery services, offering 1-hour and 3-hour shipping in various cities in the country. The move highlights the company’s focus on convenience-driven retail. As competition with Walmart intensifies, the faster delivery option strengthens Amazon’s position in the convenience space.

Amazon Doubles Down on Faster-Than-Ever Delivery Speeds

Amazon is broadening its ultra-fast delivery services, with 1-hour and 3-hour delivery options. Customers can shop from over 90,000 items in everyday and popular categories. It offers a wide range of items such as pantry, cleaning, health products, electronics, toys, clothing, and home goods.

Orders are delivered directly to customers’ doors, streamlining the shopping experience. These delivery services are integrated into Amazon’s existing Same-Day delivery experience.

To ease the shopping experience, the eligible products have clear labels, specific search filters, and a storefront where customers can easily browse. The company is positioning inventory locally to quickly restock everyday essentials.

Expansion Into Smaller Cities and Suburban Markets

Amazon is expanding its 1- and 3-hour delivery in more cities and towns in the country. The services span major metro areas like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. Smaller markets include Des Moines, Boise, and American Fork.

Currently, hundreds of locations provide 1-hour delivery. The 3-hour delivery model has a broader reach, covering over 2,000 cities and towns, including suburban areas. The service operates seven days a week, and it is expected to cover more regions within the next few months.

“Our customers are busier than ever and are looking for new ways to save time while keeping their households running. We saw an opportunity to use our unique operational expertise and delivery network to help make customers’ lives a little easier while unlocking even more value for Prime members,” said Udit Madan, senior vice president of Worldwide Operations at Amazon.

Pricing Structure For Prime and Non-Prime Users

Amazon is offering discounted delivery fees for Prime members using its faster delivery options.

  • Prime members can access 1-hour delivery for $9.99 and 3-hour delivery for $4.99.
  • Non-Prime customers pay $19.99 for a 1-hour delivery and $14.99 for a 3-hour delivery.

Prime members can continue enjoying the standard Same-Day Delivery at no extra charge on eligible orders.

Walmart’s Delivery Strategy

Walmart’s delivery strategy is based on convenience, membership benefits, and adaptable delivery with Walmart+ and the InHome program. The company integrates several types of delivery systems, such as regular shipping, same-day delivery, and in-home delivery.

From early morning to quick delivery service within 30 mins, Walmart’s delivery model is curated to cater to every need. Trained Walmart associates handle orders from the store to the home.

Since Amazon has been investing in expedited fulfillment and local inventory, the implementation is a sign of turning fast delivery into part of the customer experience.
