An elevated neighborhood dining destination is preparing to debut in Norwood, breathing new life into a longstanding local landmark.
Gemma Kitchen & Bar is set to open at 171 Nahatan St, taking over the former home of Olde Colonial Cafe, which closed in late December after more than five decades in business. The space originally served as a firehouse dating back to 1907.
Behind the concept are co-owners and longtime friends Giuseppe Tropeano and Michelle Jewell, a seasoned hospitality duo with strong ties to the community. Tropeano spent 18 years as head chef and 15 years as general manager at the nearby Lewis’ Restaurant & Grille, has worked at several notable local restaurants, and was also part-owner of Brioche in Wellesley.

A bartender by trade, Jewell spent eight years at Lewis’, six as bar manager, and worked at several local entertainment venues throughout her career, including Kelleher’s Bar & Grill, Jillians, and Tequila Rain. After a short hiatus from the restaurant world, she and Tropeano are returning with a project that feels both personal and purposeful.
“After several months away from the industry for both Giuseppe and I, this project marks a meaningful return to hospitality,” Jewell shared with What Now Boston. “We’ve truly missed serving our guests over the past five months. We’ve put a lot of heart into creating a space where people can come together and enjoy great food and great company.”

Spanning roughly 7,000 square feet across two levels, the restaurant is designed to strike a balance between polished and approachable. The first floor will feature a main dining room with a full-service bar, while the second level will house a more relaxed sports lounge complete with its own bar and dedicated function space.
Altogether, the venue will accommodate up to 198 guests, making it well-suited for everything from intimate dinners to large-scale gatherings and private events. The project came together thanks in large part to the expertise of Michael Noe of MCN Construction, whose work helped bring Gemma Kitchen & Bar to life.
On the menu, guests can expect a thoughtful mix of elevated comfort food and timeless favorites. Early highlights include Dirty Fried Olives, Fire House Stack Nachos, house-made pizzas, authentic Bolognese, and Steak Frites. A robust cocktail program will complement the dishes, while dessert offerings remain under wraps for now. “We need to keep a few surprises,” the team teased.
“We are so close, and we want to make sure everything is absolutely perfect before we open,” the duo said. “The Norwood community has been incredibly supportive, and we’re excited to finally bring this concept to life.” If all goes according to plan, Gemma will open its doors in late April 2026.
With construction nearing completion and final touches underway, Gemma Kitchen & Bar is poised to become a go-to gathering place for Norwood and its surrounding communities. Follow along for sneak peeks and grand opening updates on social media at @gemmakandb.
