Hathaway and David To Open Gallery In West Midtown

The center wants to be a “place of dialogue and debate”, “inclusiveness and education”.

“] will be opening Hathaway David Contemporary, a 9,000 square foot for-profit art gallery in West Midtown this April.

The gallery will be located at 887 Howell Mill Road NW, behind Bocado. Cost of construction will total to $130,000, according to a Commercial Alteration permit filed with City of Atlanta.

David will be acting as the artistic director and curator, and Hathaway will act as director of operations.

Hathaway told What Now Atlanta (WNA) on Wednesday that she was attracted to West Midtown neighborhood because of its “edginess”, accessibility from Downtown and Buckhead, and walking traffic. David added, “We wanted to be in the center, where we could embrace all of the different parts of Atlanta.”

The most important thing about the gallery will be the educational component, according to Hathaway. One of the missions of the gallery will be to break down the “traditional barriers between artists and collectors, critics, educators and the public,” according to their mission statement.

“We want everyone to feel included. If someone sees a piece of art that they don’t understand, we want them to feel comfortable enough to ask about it.”

David’s focus will be on curating art made by artists from New York and Atlanta, as he wishes to bridge art communities of the two regions. Some Atlanta artists that they will be working with are Karen Schwartz, Pam Longobardi, Maxine Hess, Brenda Rehrig, Jeffrey Wilcox Pacilipan, and Barbara Brenner. New York artists will include Glenn Goldberg, Brenda Goodman, Arnold Mesches, and Farrell Brickhouse, many of which David has worked with in his New York gallery, Life on Mars.

David has 35 years of experience in the art community as a painter, educator, and curator. His works are part of permanent collections in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. He was also a professor at SCAD Atlanta and Princeton as well as other institutions.

Hathaway has a background in sales and marketing, and is an exhibiting photographer and painter. Her inspiration comes from her grandfather, who was a prominent photographer from the 1930s to his death in 2014.
