Dudley’s Bakery, a longtime roadside bakery known for its fresh bread and pastries, has changed ownership in Santa Ysabel at 30218 CA-78.
The business is now owned by Michel Malécot and Michael Brewer, according to San Diego Magazine. While the bakery remains open daily, the new owners plan to preserve its legacy while making selective updates to the menu and operations. Customers can expect a mix of longtime favorites along with some new additions influenced by Malécot’s background in French baking.
Menu updates will include both returning items and new offerings. The team plans to bring back retired recipes, such as sun-dried tomato bread, while also improving existing products, including increasing the cheese in the jalapeño cheddar bread. At the same time, Malécot’s experience from The French Gourmet will influence the introduction of baguettes, filled croissants, quiches, and canelés de Bordeaux.
Originally founded in 1963 by Dudley Pratt, the bakery has gone through several ownership changes over the decades. It was later owned by Mel Ashley in 1976, by Barry Brunye in 2007, and, most recently, by Lydia Bilic and Sejla Holland in 2018. Despite these transitions, Dudley’s has remained a consistent stop for those traveling through the area. The bakery has built a reputation as a destination for both locals and visitors.
Located about 50 miles northeast of downtown San Diego along the route to Julian, Dudley’s Bakery has long attracted a steady mix of tourists, hikers, and cyclists. Its setting has helped it maintain a strong presence as a roadside stop known for fresh-baked goods. The new ownership aims to keep that identity intact while expanding its reach. Plans include growing wholesale and production to serve more customers across the county.
This will be an excellent next chapter for Dudley’s Bakery as it balances tradition with gradual updates. The focus on maintaining core items while introducing new products reflects a measured approach to change. With expanded production and a broader menu, the bakery is expected to continue serving its existing customer base while reaching new audiences across the region.
