Namsan Korean Restaurant on Westnedge Avenue in Kalamazoo is set to close. The popular Korean eatery will serve its final meal on May 31, 2026. After eight years in business, rising costs and economic pressures led to the decision to close.
Namsan Korean Restaurant to Close After Eight Years
Namsan Korean Restaurant, owned by Sunny Kwon, was founded in 2018. It is a family-operated restaurant that offers authentic Korean cuisine and ambience.
In a social media post, the restaurant announced it will close on May 31, 2026. The restaurant team said, “After many wonderful years serving our community, we’ve decided it’s time to retire and close this chapter. Our final day of service will be May 31.”
According to a Kalamazoo Press report, the restaurant is permanently closing due to high rent and financial challenges. The report states that the landlord increased the rent by 45% from January.
Kwon, the restaurant’s owner, has stated that the building is old and in need of maintenance. “The family has attempted to make some repairs out of pocket, but they simply cannot afford all the work needed,” was said in the report.
Over the years, the restaurant built a loyal following in Kalamazoo for its traditional Korean flavors. Recommended menu items include Bulgogi, Bibimbap, boiled dumplings, and ramen noodle soup.
Community Reaction
Following the announcement, customers shared reactions and memories on social media.
One customer wrote, “Can we convince you to stay and just find a different location? For us who NEED authentic Korean food, you’re a necessity.”

“Best kimchi in town!! We always had a lovely meal, and the food was so good. You’ll be missed,“ wrote another customer.
In the social media post, the restaurant team thanked the community members and its staff for their support and said, “We are deeply grateful for your support, kindness, and the countless memories shared around our tables. This journey has been truly special, made possible by our loyal customers and dedicated team.”
As Namsan Korean Restaurant winds down its operations, the Michigan dining community will fondly miss the eatery. The restaurant team invites the community to stop by and celebrate the final chapter of its journey.
