After eight years in business, Tuba Baking Co. is preparing to shut down. The small yet cozy German-inspired bakery in Dayton, Kentucky, has set June 27, 2026, as its final day. The bakery offers original Swabian-style pretzels and other scratch-made baked goods.
Tuba Baking Co. to Shut Down After 8 Years, Cites Family Priorities
Drew and Valerie Rath opened Tuba Baking Co. in Covington in 2019. The concept relocated to Dayton in 2021. In a social media post, the owners of the establishment shared the heartbreaking news of its closure.
“It’s been a crazy 8 years! But the time has come for us to make the very difficult decision to end this chapter of Tuba,” shared the owners.
They said the decision was driven by a desire to focus on their family. In the post, they stated, “We want to be able to spend more time with our kids and give them the time and attention they have so graciously sacrificed for us to even get this far.”
The business began as a small farmers market stand serving authentic German dishes at affordable prices. Over the years, the eatery became a Dayton staple where people gathered and celebrated with German food and beers.
The owners thanked the community for its support and invited locals to visit before it closes. “We are going to spend the next several weeks until we close our doors Saturday, June 27th, celebrating all the years, dishes, drinks, and laughter we’ve been fortunate enough to share with y’all,” added the restaurant owners.
Two Popular Kentucky Restaurants Hit Hard by Closures in The Past
Kentucky’s food scene has been uncertain since last year, with several well-known restaurants closing down.
Bad Wolf Burgers

The Lexington burger spot closed after 15 years in business. Bad Wolf Burgers was known for its creative burgers and loaded fries served in a casual setting. The restaurant served its final meal on December 31, 2025.
The restaurant team shared an emotional goodbye note on social media and thanked the community. No specific reason for the closure was shared.
Columbia Steak Express

According to a Herald Leader report, Columbia Steak Express closed its doors on February 15. Located on Southland Drive in Lexington, the steakhouse offered affordable steak meals, including specials like the “Nighthawk Special” and the Kentucky Hot Brown.
After 31 years of service, the restaurant shut down due to a shift in customer trends, lease issues, and financial strain.
Together, all these closures reflect the ongoing shift in Kentucky’s restaurant scene. With Tuba Baking Co.’s upcoming closure, it joins the growing trend that is reshaping the restaurant industry.
