Houston-based Platypus Brewing is preparing to close its doors permanently. The Australian-inspired brewery and restaurant will serve its final drinks and meals on May 31.
The brewery is known for its signature drinks, Australian comfort food, and pet-friendly space. The closure comes as the lease for its Washington Avenue space comes to an end.
Platypus Brewing Nears Final Call in Houston
After serving the community for nine years, Platypus Brewing is saying goodbye. The brewery will shut down its operations at 1902 Washington Ave., Suite E, Houston, on May 31.
The brewery has built its reputation around its “Brewed with Texan Heart & Australian Soul” motto. It features a casual and cozy taproom, a full-service restaurant, and a pet-friendly patio.
The restaurant menu offers Aussie comfort food, shareable plates, and bar favorites like fish and chips. The drinks menu includes signature beers like Bobby Dazzler, For Hefe’s Sake, and Out of Orbit, along with an extensive wine selection and cocktails.
The brewery announced the closure via Facebook. The team wrote, “Platypus Brewing will be closing its Washington Ave doors at the end of May, with our final day of service on May 31.”
The brewery thanked the community, neighbors, and its staff for their support and said, “From first pints to lasting traditions, the memories we’ve created together will continue to shape everything we do.”
Following the announcement, customers expressed disappointment on social media. Several fans also wrote heartfelt messages and wished the brewery the best for its future.
One fan wrote, “Wish you guys the best, but dang, I will miss your sours!! Fav brewery in HTX.”
Brewery Prepares for Its Next Chapter After Lease Ends
In the post, the team explained that the Washington Avenue lease has come to an end. However, they assured that this is not a permanent goodbye.
The team mentioned, “As our lease comes to an end, we’re turning the page toward what’s next… after nearly 10 years since we poured our very first pint.”
According to a report by Chron., the owners of the brewery are planning to open a full-service restaurant. The new family-friendly restaurant will be located in the Garden Oaks neighborhood.
“The ownership team envisions a space that will be a family-friendly community hub with a green space, games, and activities. Platypus’ beer will be available, but it will no longer be brewed on-site,” the report stated.
While the brewery confirmed, “And there IS a next chapter. Behind the scenes, something new is already in the works, building on what we’ve started here.” Specific details about the opening have not been shared yet.
As the brewery winds down its operations, the Platypus Brewing team encourages the Houston community to visit and enjoy one last drink before it closes.
