Arts+ is planning a major redevelopment project at 2304 The Plaza near Plaza Midwood, where the nonprofit organization aims to create an expanded arts and community hub, President and Executive Director Devlin McNeil told WhatNow Charlotte.

Arts+ is a Charlotte-based nonprofit organization focused on arts education, classes, and community programming, and according to a recent permit filing with Charlotte Water, the redevelopment project is currently moving through approvals, with completion targeted for 2027, McNeil said.

Plans for the site include renovating the property’s century-old former church buildings while adding a new shared space linking the campus buildings. The redevelopment is expected to add roughly 5,000 square feet to the property while also improving accessibility through elevator and ADA access across the campus.

“In addition to classrooms and performance space, the redevelopment will also include areas for exhibitions and community gatherings,” McNeil said. “It’s going to be an opportunity for artists to come and exhibit their work. We want the campus to be a place where the broader community can come together, learn, create, and participate in the arts.”

In addition to Arts+ classes and performances, the organization envisions the campus serving as a resource for local artists, nonprofits, and community groups.

“We’ve learned that there is a huge interest, not only from the cultural community, but nonprofits in general need space to be able to do their programs,” McNeil said. “They need to be able to come in and do a workshop or a program, or have access to the performance theater to play their music.”

Once complete, the campus is expected to become “a hive of activity” for both Arts+ and the surrounding community.

McNeil said the roughly 2.5-acre site stood out because of its central location between neighborhoods including Plaza Midwood, NoDa, Belmont, and Villa Heights, helping make the campus more accessible to the surrounding community.
