Trader Joe’s is planning to open a new location in Matthews, according to recent reporting by Axios Charlotte. A spokesperson for the company confirmed plans for the upcoming store but did not share an opening timeline or exact address.

Axios Charlotte reported the proposed Trader Joe’s would be part of the Matthews Gateway mixed-use development off East John Street. The report also noted that town planning staff still expect the grocery chain to join the project.

Public planning documents tied to the Matthews Gateway development previously referenced a grocery store space measuring roughly 13,500 square feet, according to Axios Charlotte.

The Matthews location would mark Trader Joe’s fourth store serving the Charlotte market, joining existing locations in Midtown, Rea Farms, and University City. According to the company’s website, Trader Joe’s is known for its neighborhood grocery format centered on private-label products, frozen meals, snacks, produce, beverages, and prepared foods.

Trader Joe’s joins several grocery brands continuing to expand across the Charlotte area, including Wegmans, Publix, Aldi, and Sprouts. Additional details regarding the Matthews store have not yet been announced. WhatNow Charlotte will provide additional updates on the Matthews location as more information becomes available.
