Something groovy is brewing in the Charleston area.
What began as a mobile coffee bar at Summers Corner and the Charleston Farmers Market has grown into a brick-and-mortar business, with one storefront already open and two more expected to open this summer.
Harlow & Pearl, owned by Nichole Tupas, is expanding to 769 Meeting St. and 1064 Clement Ferry Rd., joining its flagship location inside The Starlight Motor Inn.
Known for its popular specialty lattes that have built a loyal following, Tupas told What Now Charleston each shop will have its own distinct personality and character.
“Each location is going to have their own speciality menu. We’re not going to run the same specials at every location. The reason why I’m doing it that way is because I want to make sure that people visit all the locations,” Tupas said.
While specialty menus will vary, each location will offer a core menu of classic coffee, tea and espresso options.
The first shop, which opened in April, has a “very ’60s retro vibe,” with drinks inspired by the era.
The downtown location, expected to open in mid-June, will feature a “girly, Barbie-inspired” theme.
“There will be Barbie themed specials. We’re going to do a Girl Scout Barbie with a s’more, campfire latte. We’re going to do a peaches and cream Barbie with peaches and cream matcha. We’re going to do a Pilot Barbie and do a Biscoff latte,” she said.
The Clements Ferry location, expected to open in July, will blend elements from both shops.
“The Clements Ferry location is set in an actual ranch style home. Instead of tearing down the walls, we’re going to have it set up like a time capsule. One room will be a boy’s room in the 60s, the other will be a teenage girls room in the 60s. The walls will reflect the time period,” Tupas said.
Tupas aims to create visually engaging spaces where the community can connect.
“We really want to integrate the community. We want the community to feel welcomed in our space—they can work, they can hang out, not just come and get a drink. We also understand Charleston is very touristy so we want to cater to that as well,” she said.
Giving back is also a key goal, with a focus on creating employment opportunities for people.
“It’s not just a coffee shop, we want to help people too. I love that we can create employment for people. I’m excited that the girls we’ve hired so far are excited to work for us too,” Tupas said.
