Bass Pro Shops, the outdoor retailer specializing in hunting, fishing, camping, and recreational gear, is getting ready to open a new location in La Mesa at Grossmont Center at 5500 Grossmont Center Drive.

The company’s sixth California location is expected to open in 2028, according to a press release. The new 148,000-square-foot store will be located at Grossmont Center, with convenient access from the intersection of State Route 125 and Interstate 8. The project is expected to create more than 150 jobs, with employment opportunities to be posted closer to opening. Customers can expect an extensive selection of outdoor gear, apparel, footwear, fishing equipment, hunting supplies, camping essentials, and boating products, along with the knowledgeable customer service the company is known for.

“It’s exciting to serve the great anglers and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the San Diego region,” said Johnny Morris, legendary angler, conservationist, and founder of Bass Pro Shops. “With access to both saltwater and freshwater fishing, this area offers something truly special, and we look forward to helping families and friends enjoy it together.”

Founded by Johnny Morris in Springfield, Missouri, in 1972, Bass Pro Shops has grown from an eight-square-foot space inside his father’s liquor store into one of North America’s largest outdoor retailers. Today, the company operates nearly 200 locations across North America, including Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s stores, following the brands’ merger in 2017. In addition to its retail stores, the company owns White River Marine Group and Big Cedar Lodge, while continuing to expand its conservation initiatives throughout the United States and Canada.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Bass Pro Shops to La Mesa and excited that they have chosen Grossmont Center as the home for their newest location,” said La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostathis. “This announcement is another exciting milestone in the ongoing transformation of Grossmont Center. Bass Pro Shops will bring new jobs, attract visitors from throughout the region, and further strengthen our local economy. We look forward to the positive impact this investment will have on our community for years to come.”

The La Mesa location will feature a custom design inspired by Southern California’s outdoor heritage. The store will combine retail with entertainment, outdoor education, and conservation, while incorporating localized artwork and displays created specifically for the region. This will be an excellent landing space for Bass Pro Shops, considering Grossmont Center’s regional draw and direct access from two major freeways. The announcement also marks another milestone in the ongoing transformation of the shopping center.

“Bass Pro Shops is exactly the kind of destination retailer that brings people together,” said Jon Stoeckly, Vice President of Regional Development for Federal Realty. “Their commitment to outdoor recreation, family experiences, and community aligns perfectly with our vision for the future of Grossmont Center. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome them to La Mesa.”

Conservation remains a central part of the company’s mission. Bass Pro Shops says it has donated more than 10 percent of its earnings over the past decade to conservation efforts across North America. Customers are also invited to support those initiatives through the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund by rounding up purchases at checkout. The company also offers its Legendary Salute Program, which provides a 10 percent discount every day to veterans, active military members, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and state fish and wildlife agency employees.
