Costco Wholesale has set its sights on North Charleston for a potential new store.
The membership-only retailer plans to build at 9000 Blue House Rd., according to a site development plan filed with the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services and obtained by What Now Charleston.
The proposed development spans about 25 acres and includes a 181,000-square-foot warehouse and a 3,600-square-foot fuel canopy.
The North Charleston store would mark Costco Wholesale’s third location in the Charleston area, joining existing warehouses on Ashley Town Center Drive and Park Avenue Boulevard in Mount Pleasant.
Costco Wholesale is known for selling groceries, household essentials, electronics, furniture, apparel and other goods in bulk at discounted prices. Its warehouse clubs also feature services such as pharmacies, optical centers, tire centers, gas stations and food courts, depending on the location.
The company traces its roots to Price Club, which opened its first warehouse in San Diego in 1976. It initially served small businesses before expanding membership to consumers, a move fueling the growth of the warehouse club industry. Costco, then, opened its first warehouse in Seattle in 1983, according to its website.
What Now Charleston reached out to Costco Wholesale for additional information. A company spokesperson declined to comment, citing the project’s pending status.
