Mystic Kitchen, the next chapter for Hamilton’s beloved Mystic Ramen, is opening inside Jackson Square at 2 King Street West, taking over the former Crack Me Up diner space next to the mall’s food court. Owners Heather Elson and chef Noah Woods confirmed the move on Instagram, though a specific opening date and menu haven’t been announced yet.
The restaurant’s original King William Street location closed in August after mounting challenges in the space became too much to manage, a closure that drew packed final days and heavy community support from longtime regulars. What made the announcement land differently for locals is the geography: Mystic Ramen actually started years earlier as a small stall inside the lower level of the nearby Hamilton Farmers’ Market, putting Jackson Square almost within walking distance of where the concept first took shape.
Elson and Woods anticipated some pushback given Jackson Square’s reputation among some Hamiltonians, and addressed it directly in their announcement. “We live here in the downtown core. Have done for over a decade,” they wrote. “We started our business here seven years ago. We are raising our kids here. We believe in a vibrant, thriving core, and we’re committed to being a part of it. We’re here to shine our light in dark corners, and we hope you’ll join us.”
The move places Mystic Kitchen inside a mall that’s been a fixture of downtown Hamilton since 1972, connected directly to the Sheraton Hamilton, the Hamilton Public Library, and the same Farmers’ Market where the concept began. For a restaurant built on comfort food, coming home to a building tied so closely to its origin story gives the reopening an added layer of meaning for its most loyal customers.
