Burlington is working on another Houston opening. According to a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation permit, the national off-price retailer is planning to open a store in the Gessner Center at 8201 S. Gessner Dr.

The permit further states that construction for the new Burlington store is expected to start in early February next year and wrap up by early August 2027. If permitting goes smoothly and the estimated $750,000 construction project stays on track, the new Burlington should open in the Gessner Center by next Summer.

Julie Charo was listed on the permit. What Now Houston reached out to Charo and Burlington’s Houston Operations Manager, Rashaan Dennis, to find out more about the upcoming opening. Unfortunately, we did not hear back from either by the time of this publication.

“We are a growing company dedicated to providing great merchandise values to people nationwide,” the company’s website read.

“We are bound to open a new store in your area. Come shop us and see what all the excitement is about. Do not miss out on the great deals near you!”

Burlington (originally known as Burlington Coat Factory) began in 1972 when founders Monroe and Henrietta Milstein purchased a former dress factory in Burlington, New Jersey, using $75,000 from Henrietta’s savings. The store initially sold discounted, first-quality coats and outerwear bought in bulk directly from manufacturers. By the late 1970s and 1980s, the company expanded its inventory to include sportswear, suits, children’s apparel, and home goods. Milstein took the company public for the first time with an initial public offering (IPO) in June 1983. By 1990, sales surpassed $600 million, and by 1994 the chain had more than 180 stores across dozens of states and reached $1 billion in sales.

“For over half a century, we have been delivering value to our customers, associates and our communities,” the Burlington website reads.

“With our every day low prices on top brand name merchandise for the entire family and home, combined with our dedication to our thousands of associates nationwide and our ability to make an impact in the communities where we live and work, Burlington is proud to be an award-winning off-price retailer.”

Headquartered in Burlington Township, New Jersey, the company now operates more than 1,200 Burlington stores across 47 states and Puerto Rico, ranking as the third-largest off-price retailer in the United States behind TJX (TJ Maxx/Marshalls) and Ross Stores. There are about 164 Burlington stores in Texas, with at least 35 stores in the Greater Houston region.

What Now also reached out to Burlington President and COO Travis Marquette to learn more about expansion plans. But Marquette did not get back to us by the time of this publication.

Burlington is anticipated to open in the Gessner Center at 8201 S. Gessner Dr. by next Summer.

(This is a developing story. As more information is made available, we will update this article. Stay tuned!)
