Lafayette-based professional artist Katherin Freeman is in the midst of converting an old service station in the city into a working studio, retail space, and event center that is slated to open by the early next year.
Called The Studio by Katherine Freeman, the upcoming venue is meant to serve as an active workspace and as a retail location for Freeman’s paintings, prints, and textiles. She recently told What Now New Orleans that she plans to cultivate a communal environment that showcases regional talent and hosts local vendors.
“I do plan to feature other artists as well and put together some art shows,” Freeman said. “It will also be an event rental space.”
On top of that, The Studio will host everything from art pop-ups to private celebrations and children’s parties. Drawing from her own experiences as a parent, she wanted the location to bridge the gap between a sophisticated gallery and a welcoming, family-friendly venue.
“I want it just to be like a creative gathering space that’s fun, beautiful, and inspiring to other people,” Freeman said.
Renovations to the former gas station at the 2301 Johnston St. location are currently underway. Freeman projects that physical construction will wrap up by mid-December, with an official grand opening tentatively planned to coincide with Mardi Gras festivities.
