Café Van Houtte is coming to the former Starbucks space at Place d’Orléans Shopping Centre, according to a Facebook video shared by content creator Fil Caballes. The mall is located at 110 Place d’Orléans Drive in Ottawa.
The video shows signage announcing “Opening Soon.” An opening date has not yet been announced.
The brand’s history began in Montreal in 1919, when Albert-Louis Van Houtte purchased an import shop on Ontario Street East. Coffee was among the products sold there. Unhappy with the roast supplied to the shop, he eventually began roasting the beans himself to achieve the darker coffee he preferred.
The café business followed decades later. In 1975, his son Pierre Van Houtte opened a shop at Montreal’s Complexe Desjardins, serving specialty coffee and sandwiches made with French deli meats. The company introduced its café-bistro format in 1982.
Today, its cafés serve brewed coffee, espresso, lattes, and cappuccinos, as well as matcha, chai, and hot chocolate.
Food options include breakfast sandwiches, wraps, salads, quiches, and pastries. The brand continues to use small-batch roasting and offers Fairtrade-certified coffee.
Café Van Houtte is part of MTY Food Group, whose franchising website lists more than 30 cafés across Quebec and Ontario. The chain already has an Ottawa location at Tanger Outlets.
