Turning a would-be professional crisis into an opportunity, a small group of local stylists is in the process of establishing Moss & Mane Hair Collective in Marrero. When it launches early next year, the salon will include a group of colleagues who suddenly found themselves without a professional home.

“The salon that I was at was closing down and the girls who worked there were wondering what we were going to do,” founder Jenna Vanveckhoven recently told What Now New Orleans. “I just decided that I would open a booth rental salon. It’s truly not something I ever wanted to do before, but I was like why not.”

Construction of a formerly empty unit is underway, as a major renovation will require the tearing down of interior walls to install new plumbing and lay down fresh tile. While Vanveckhoven initially hoped for a pre-holiday debut, the grand opening is slated for early next year.

Once open, Moss & Mane will anchor its menu around core specialties including coloring, blonding, and extensions. Situated conveniently right off the Westbank Expressway in Marrero, the new establishment will draw local clientele from both sides of the river, Vanveckhoven said. As the space is being built out, Vanveckhoven is actively recruiting like-minded professionals to fill out the workspace.

“I’m looking for stylists who wants to be independent, but also have a salon community as well,” Vanveckhoven said.
