UPDATE (August 13, 2018): Topstitch Ponce City Market To Open August 18

Topstitch, a fabric shop, and sewing studio will open in August on the second floor of Ponce City Market above the Old Fourth Ward redevelopment’s Central Food Hall.

Situated next door to the forthcoming Root Baking Co., Topstitch will offer apparel fabrics, sewing tools, kits, “crafty gifts” and more.

The company was previously located in Decatur.

“Atlanta native Leigh Metcalf was inspired to start Topstitch during her six years working as a writer and photographer in London,” according to a press release Friday.

“While there, she wrote London Stitch and Knit, a guide to London’s fabric and knitting shops, an experience that shaped her buying choices for the shop today. She sources fabrics from around the world, including from France, Japan, England and indie American fabric companies.”

The 1,600-square-foot shop will feature black and white accents with pops of yellow alongside a handpainted mural by local illustrator Sarah Neuburger with the words “inspire – gather – sew.”

A vintage, glass-and-mirror shelved shop counter will serve as a focal point of the shop, and white metal racks will house items from patterned fabrics to accessories made exclusively for Topstitch.

Metcalf will offer classes at the shop’s in-house classroom, which will accommodate up to eight attendees.

Courses ranging from dressmaking to jeans-making to block printing.

The studio will also host private sewing parties, as well as “Friends Night Out” sewing classes every Friday night where attendees can make customized items like espadrilles, wristlets or toiletry bags.
