A recent lease signing has revealed the lucky new occupant of La Jolla’s much-anticipated Whitney Project development. Founded in Australia, MRKT SPACE is a multi-purpose convenience store and cafe that sells everything from fresh produce to Italian dinners.

The 2202 Avenida De La Playa complex has been generating buzz since it began construction in La Jolla in 2018. By 2019, San Diegans were curious to see what restaurant would enter the premises.

What Now San Diego reached out to the MRKT SPACE owner Matt Power for comment, but they have yet to make a statement.

Power launched the first MRKT SPACE in Australia several years ago and began to introduce the concept into San Diego through Leucadia. That Encinitas location, announced in October 2020, is gearing up for a May 2021 opening.

While La Jolla’s MRKT SPACE is still in its early stages, San Diegans can expect it to be a fully-functioning cafe to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, in addition to offering grab-and-go items. These details were disclosed by a real estate agent involved in the lease signing.

The menu at their Australia restaurant includes classics like avocado toast, prosciutto sandwiches and charcuterie boards. Other takeout options include coffee, tea and a variety of grocery goods.

An opening date for the La Jolla location is still unknown, but What Now San Diego will continue to update the story as more details unfold.
