Houston’s neon-lit American Chinese will open its first Austin’s location. The Rice Box, Houston’s retro-futuristic American Chinese takeout concept, has confirmed a new Austin location at 2129 E. 7th St., according to the brand’s official site.
The brand has built an unique aesthetic characterized by its neon-lit, retro-arcade design and its fusion menu of reinvented Chinese American classics, including house fried rice, General Tso, sesame, sweet and sour, and Kung Pao chicken, along with Chongqing wings and nitro teas.

The Austin outpost adds to a growing footprint for the brand, which currently operates locations in Houston’s Montrose, Rice Village, and Greenway Plaza neighborhoods, alongside a Webster location previously reported on by What Now Houston, where the brand was expanding with a ground-up, 3,435-square-foot restaurant under founder and CEO John Peterson.
The Rice Box got its start as a Houston food truck in 2011 before opening its first permanent location in Montrose. The brand later expanded with a second food truck at the University of Houston in 2013.
The new location will occupy a space formerly occupied by Flyrite Chicken, a local craft chicken restaurant offering sandwiches, wraps, salads, bowls, and vegan options.
