A Boulder-based açaí concept that had been making its way to the western suburbs of Boston will no longer be moving forward.

Previously filed city permits indicated that Rush Bowls was preparing to open its third Massachusetts location at 315 Walnut St in Newtonville, taking over the former Cobella Hair Salon space. A “coming soon” sign had also recently been spotted outside the storefront, according to a post within the Newton Real Estate Forum Facebook group, and the location is still listed as “coming soon” on the brand’s website.

Founded in 2004 near the University of Colorado by former Wall Street professional Andrew Pudalov, Rush Bowls has steadily grown from a college-town favorite into a national franchise. Since launching franchising efforts in 2015, the brand now operates more than 55 locations across the country, with over 100 additional shops in development.

The menu centers on açaí bowls, with nearly 20 varieties featuring bases like açaí and other all-natural fruit and veggie blends. Guests can choose from the signature lineup, customize their own bowls, or opt for a selection of smoothies, fresh juices, and cold brew. Beyond bowls, the menu includes energy bites, wraps, salads, quesadillas, and flatbreads.

Permits had indicated that the Newtonville location would be operated by local franchisee Anjanette Cuan and span approximately 877 square feet, with plans for a to-go-only setup with no indoor seating, operating daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Although the Newtonville project is no longer moving forward, existing Massachusetts locations can be found in Arlington and Mansfield.

Correction: A previous version of this article stated that Rush Bowls was planning a Newtonville location; Anjanette Cuan has confirmed that the project is no longer moving forward.
