A South Asian grocery chain is bringing a massive new supermarket to the western suburbs of Boston.

Apna Bazar Farmers Market is taking over the former Stop & Shop at 539-571 Boston Turnpike (Route 9) in Shrewsbury, confirmed owner Romy Selhi. The approximately 70,000-square-foot supermarket is expected to open in October 2026, with an official grand opening date to be announced once finalized.

The new grocery store will feature Apna Bazar’s signature selection of Indian and South Asian groceries, with an extensive assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables, rice, flour, lentils, premium spices, frozen foods, dairy products, snacks, beverages, and household essentials. Beyond its South Asian offerings, shoppers can also expect groceries from across the Mediterranean, American, South American, Latin American, and Middle Eastern cuisines.

“Apna Bazar is more than a grocery store—it is where quality, culture, value, and community come together,” Selhi told What Now Boston. “We will focus on offering excellent quality, variety, and competitive prices,”

The Shrewsbury store will mark Apna Bazar’s fourth Massachusetts location, joining its existing supermarkets in Woburn, Lowell, and Norwood. The company traces its roots back 35 years, when founders Jaswinder Singh and Deepak Bhardwaj opened a modest 600-square-foot store in Jackson Heights, New York. Guided by their vision, dedication, and mentorship, the business has since grown into a nationwide chain with 32 stores across the United States.

In addition to operating its own supermarkets, Apna Bazar is one of the leading importers of products from South and Southeast Asia, bringing trusted brands, traditional ingredients, and authentic flavors to communities throughout the country. The company has expanded its footprint across the East Coast in recent years, establishing itself as a major player in the specialty and international grocery market.

“Apna Bazar Shrewsbury is being developed as one of the largest ethnic supermarkets ever opened in the United States,” said Selhi. “This unique destination will offer an exceptional variety of South and Southeast Asian, Mediterranean, American, South American, Latin American, and Middle Eastern groceries—all under one roof… As Apna Bazar continues to grow, our commitment remains unchanged: exceptional quality, fair prices, outstanding service, and unwavering support for the communities we proudly serve.”
