Two new Trader Joe’s locations are officially headed to the Boston metro.

The specialty grocery chain is currently under construction at 34 Walkers Brook Drive in Reading‘s Crossing at Walkers Brook shopping center, with an opening planned for 2026. Another location is also in the works at 101 McConville Way in Quincy Center, where it is expected to debut in late 2027.

The Reading store will become Trader Joe’s 22nd Massachusetts location, taking over the former Staples space as the plaza’s new flagship tenant. The roughly 13,700-square-foot market will occupy about 70 percent of the former Staples space, according to a page within the Town of Reading’s website. Once open, it will join neighboring retailers such as The Paper Store, Golf Galaxy, The Home Depot, and Jordan’s Furniture.

“Since opening the very first Trader Joe’s north of Boston in 1998, we’ve been proud to serve customers across two wonderful communities in Saugus and Peabody,” said Chris Maguire, Regional Vice President at Trader Joe’s. “As we continue this exciting journey, expanding into Reading feels like a natural next step. Our new store in Reading will allow us to better serve our loyal customers in Reading and neighboring towns, including Wakefield, Woburn, Stoneham, North Reading, and many other vibrant communities that make this area so special. We’re thrilled to become part of the neighborhood and look forward to welcoming both long-time customers and new faces in this exciting new chapter.”

Meanwhile, the Quincy location is set to become the anchor tenant of a major mixed-use development near Generals Bridge. Plans for the project include a 297-unit apartment building, a new parking garage, and additional retail space surrounding the approximately 14,000-square-foot grocery store.

“Trader Joe’s will be a great addition, and it’s also an incredibly important symbol of the progress we’ve made together as a community restoring the vitality of our downtown over the years,” said Mayor Koch. “We have plenty of work to do, but this is a great sign for what the future holds for our downtown community.”

Founded in Pasadena, California in 1967, Trader Joe’s has built a cult following with its affordable private-label products, rotating seasonal finds, and neighborhood-market atmosphere. Popular items include the Steamed Pork & Ginger Soup Dumplings, Protein Pancakes, seasonal Spiced Cider, and Brazil Nut Body Butter.

A representative for Trader Joe’s confirmed both projects with What Now Boston, noting that additional details about the Quincy store will be shared once a firm opening date is set.
