Charleston’s only independently and locally owned luxury department store is expanding.
Gwynn’s on King will open at 154 King St., joining the retailer’s flagship Gwynn’s of Mount Pleasant, according to the store’s Instagram page.
King Street is one of Charleston’s premier shopping and dining corridors, home to a mix of luxury retailers, national brands, locally owned boutiques, restaurants and historic buildings in the heart of downtown.
Gwendolyn and Norris Ward founded Gwynn’s in 1967. About three decades later, their daughter, Lynn Simon, and son-in-law, Marshall Simon, purchased the department store. Today, Madison Simon represents the third generation of the family business.
The team is currently renovating the historic 19th-century building while preserving its Charleston charm. The new store will span two floors.
“We are keeping and adding some elements of historic Charleston. We are keeping the French doors. We’re keeping the fireplaces and little pieces of history here and there. We’re adding a brand new elevator. Downstairs will have the entire store, dressing room, little courtyard. Upstairs in the space, there will be private suites, lounge areas. There’s going to be a beautiful kitchen,” Madison Simon said in an Instagram video.
Gwynn’s is known for its curated selection of designer clothing, accessories, shoes, cosmetics, skin care, upscale gifts and home goods for men and women. Its lineup of luxury brands includes Jimmy Choo, Loro Piana, Ermenegildo Zegna, Brunello Cucinelli, Lafayette 148, Tory Burch, Trish McEvoy and Tom Ford.
The department store also offers personal shopping, merchandise and gift delivery, custom tailoring and a bridal registry.
While an official opening date has not been announced, Gwynn’s on King is targeting a late summer debut. Visit the website and follow along on Instagram and Facebook for the latest updates.
