Big Papa’s Empanadas is preparing to open at 1812 Rozzelles Ferry Road in Charlotte, with owner and chef Jonathan Leonard targeting an August debut, according to reporting by The Charlotte Observer.

The upcoming counter-service restaurant will center on oversized empanadas available in a variety of sweet and savory flavors. The Charlotte Observer reports that planned offerings include fillings such as bacon-gouda cheeseburger, Cajun crab mac and cheese, and Caribbean oxtail, as well as dessert varieties. The menu is also expected to feature street tacos, grilled chicken wings, and hand-cut fries.

According to the publication, Leonard is a Johnson & Wales University graduate who returned to Charlotte in 2020 after working in corporate dining. He currently operates Freshly Cracked, a meal-prep and catering business that will be incorporated into the new restaurant. Customers will be able to purchase prepared meals alongside the restaurant’s regular menu offerings.

The concept draws inspiration from hip-hop culture, which is reflected in its branding and select menu items. Leonard told The Charlotte Observer that the business serves as a tribute to the music and pop culture influences that helped shape the concept.

Big Papa’s Empanadas will primarily offer takeout service, though The Charlotte Observer reports that a small outdoor patio is planned for guests who wish to dine on-site. Leonard also told the publication that he selected the location because of his connection to the surrounding community and the opportunity to expand local dining options.

Looking ahead, Leonard told the publication that he is exploring opportunities to work with Johnson & Wales students through internship programs. He also shared plans to pursue additional hospitality ventures in the future, including a full-service brunch restaurant.
