Birrieria Ocotlan, “the original Birria of Chicago,” will close down its Commercial Avenue location on February 13th, with plans to reopen after renovations and repairs to the building have been made, reports Block Club Chicago.

The shop announced the impending closure over social media noting, “We’ll be back soon with a new look, the same recipe, and love in every dish and taco de Birria. See you soon. Thank you!”

Birrieria Ocotlan was founded by Ramon Reyes in 1972 and is named for Reyes’ hometown of Ocotlan, Jalisco.

Today, his son Andres Reyes operates the business, which has two locations, the original Commercial Ave. spot and a storefront on 106th Street. The latter will remain open while the former will close down and likely reopen at an undisclosed time.

Reyes told Block Club Chicago he will play the reopening timeline by ear as the building is in need of extensive repairs. He also shared he isn’t prepared to call the work a “remodel.” He is considering a remodel, expansion, or rebrand for the location on 106th, he also told the publication.
