bartaco, the upscale street food brand serving flavors inspired by the beach cultures of Brazil, Uruguay, and Southern California, is coming to N. Damen Avenue in Chicago, according to a building permit. The permit, issued on February 5th, is a “demolition only” permit that will be followed by a separate permit for the restaurant build-out.

bartaco currently operates storefronts up and down the East Coast, as well as shops in Colorado and Wisconsin. This will be Chicagoland’s first location, although a shop opened in Deerfield in 2019. The location has since shuttered.

If you didn’t make it out to the taqueria while it was in operation, here’s what you need to know. bartaco, co-founded by Scott Lawton in 2010, goes for relaxed vibes mixed with a stylish beach resort feel. The brand is not only known for its tacos, rice bowls, and bites like fried plantains, street corn, and duck birria. bartaco also invites you to refresh with margaritas, house-made aguas frescas, and an array of bottled beers.

We reached out to Lawton to learn more about the restaurant’s projected opening timeline but had not heard back at the time of publication.

Once we know, you’ll know. In the meantime, check out bartaco on the ‘gram.
