Signature Japanese dishes will soon be served at the planned Japanese restaurant Hiro Izakaya coming to Chicago’s West Town neighborhood.
Celeste Group, which was behind Porto and is the team who owns Hiro Izakaya, recently announced the restaurant will be opening at 1600 W. Chicago Avenue. According to Celeste Group Managing Partner Arturo Gomez, June or early July is the estimated time of opening.
Hiro is one of the five restaurants that Chicago-based hospitality group Celeste Group currently owns, along with Beatnik On The River, Celeste, Vela and GoodFunk. The locations are spread around the Chicago area, primarily in the West Loop and River North areas.
“My partners and I have been super passionate about Japanese cuisine for a long time,” Gomez told What Now Chicago.
He previously opened up Sunda in River North. Now, this new concept is going into the space formerly occupied by Porto, a Portuguese restaurant that has been closed since 2023.
There will be many woodfire-prepared dishes on the menu at Hiro Izakaya. An article from Crain’s Chicago Business reports that customers can expect charcoal-grilled robata dishes, plates of sushi, and other savored Japanese dishes. There will also be a bar that serves drinks such as sake and toki highballs.
The hours of operation have not yet been announced, and planning for the space is still happening.
